GREAT PROGRAM AT THE CAMP INDIE TENT

wolves like us øyafestivalen 2010

Camp Indie is the Øya Festival’s celebration of the grass root scene of Norwegian music. From the 11th to the 14th of August, you will find the Camp Indie tent situated at the end of the festival area as usual. We invite little independent labels ran by enthusiasts in proper DIY fashion that exist solely because of pure love of music, and these people work without stop all year ‘round to front their artists. The Øya Festival and Camp Indie thinks there is so much great music out there that deserves extra attention, and that’s why we make this little festival within the actual festival.

Friends Of The Dude, Thu 12/8, 20.15
After being part of “Indie-Oslo” for many years, Eirik Kristensen (Monzano) and John Erling Johnson (Lofiman) decided to dig out some synthesizers from the basement and try their luck in some new territory. After many late nights in the studio, where they became aware of their common fascination for The Big Lebowski, Friends of The Dude was formed. Their references are everything from new stuff like hot Chip and MGMT to good oldies like Built To Spill and Pavement. The indie vibes are still there, but the music is a bit more structured and more danceable.

Camp Sounds, Sat 14/8, 19.05
Camp Sounds (former Campfire Kansas) play dark and mysterious new wave that is still both dancy and extrovert. Their inspiration comes from bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure, with a dash of Massive Attack and Portishead and the playfulness of Blur. Even though this band has yet to release anything, they have had quite a lot of attention from media and good reviews from amongst others Urørt and Plan B. They have spent the last couple of years working on their sound by playing live around the country. This August, we are expecting the release of their debut EP called Camp Sounds.

Honningbarna, Thu 12/8, 17.15
Wow, what a band! This is just going to rock! Southern dialect has never sounded cooler! Even these boys are just kids, their music makes you think of old heroes like Bad Religion and No Use For A Name. With a sound as tight as this you’ll think they’ve nicked Winnie The Pooh’s honey and oiled their machinery with it. If you don’t show up at the tent to experience Honningbarna live, I know there will be enough people willing to fill your spot!

The Captain & Me, Sat 14/8, 22.10
Danceable balkan country, who would have thunk it!? This is feelgood from one end to the other. West meets East, America meets Eastern Europe. The band themselves call the music “world pop”. With their genious way of combining Country/Bluegrass, The Captain & Me is definitely worth listening to. If their concert doesn’t get you going, there must be something wrong with you, not them!

Social Suicide, Thu 12/8, 16.05
These guys are suprisingly enough still in their teens, but possess a charisma that would make Mick Jagger sweat of jealousy. These guys have the audience in the damp palms of their hands. The Bergen band Social Suicide released their first single on the steaming fresh label Brilliance Records this January. Asbjørn Slettemark from Norwegian music journal Lydverket recently named them “Norway’s new screamo stars”.

Goonfight, Fri 13/8, 18.50
A pretty new band with members from Bonk, Lukestar, Beezewax and Kaospilot. Based on this, expectations are already high even before you’ve heard as much as a chord. Goonfight are finishing their debut album these days, and when they get their inspiration from bands like Fugazi, Sonic Youth and Melvins, this is definitely something to look forward to. It will be loud and good!

I See Horses, Fri 13/8, 15.40
I See Horses is an amazing live band that has gotten quite a bit of attention lately. After releasing their free EP Has My Stealth Been In Vain just before summer, their song America has been listed on national radio p3. This is indie rock with focus on catchy pop melodies. The band is inspired by Roxy Music, Orange Juice, Television and Echo & The Bunnymen to mention a few.

Philco Fiction, Sat 14/8 15.55
Philco Fiction are going to spread mezmerising female vocals and electronic sounds all over Camp Indie. This will be very atmospheric and beautiful. The band started as a duo in the early 90’s, but they have now become a trio making wonderful alternative pop music. They were voted “Untouched of the week” on Norwegian muic website Urørt.no in April, and they have also recently released their album Give Us To The Lions, recorded in a cabin in Telemark, Norway. This gives you an idea of the atmosphere they will create in the Camp Indie tent.

Therese Aune, Wed 11/8, 18.50
Therese Aune plays atmospheric dreamy pop with piano, toy piano and other instruments she likes. She started playing aged only ten years, and has developed her own personal sound that moves from calm and low to quirky and playful. Her raw and powerful vocals are in contrast with her more strict piano style. She makes music that challenges your ears a bit, and tries to create something that doesn’t just glide by easily.

Team Me, Thu 12/8, 18.40
Team Me almost won this year’s Norwegian national battle of the bands, Urørt. Now, the Øya audience finally gets to hear this super group live. sThe members of the band are originally from other bands, and they have a reputation of delivering great concerts with a lot of sound. People who were lucky enough to squeeze in the crowd at Team Me’s concert at Rockefeller Camp Indie on the 16th of May loved the show, so you should get to the tent early for this one. Team Me are currently working on their debut album.

Wolves Like Us, Fri 13/8, 20.30
The plans of starting a band were laid at an afterparty on a icy cold Oslo night in 2010, and at the end of March, these guys had their first rehearsal. Only six weeks later, their first recording was ready, and the song Deathless was aired on NRK Lydverket on the 18th of May. Wolves Like Us comprises of members from Infidels, Arms On Fire, The Unmist, Tvang, Funguson, JR Ewing, Amulet and Silver. Are we talking about a new super group? After hearing their first recordings, the answer is definietly yes!

Hypertext, Wes 11/8, 20.25
Bergen’s next pop export is Hypertext. Since their debut Corrente Elektro in 2007, this band has been in the studio again, recording a new album with Jørgen Træen, added a new member and developed a whole lot both live and on tape. They have toured Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg and Great Britain, and the response was great from both audiences and venues. Journalist Svein Ove Bakke from Norwegian paper Dagbladet said this about the band’s live performance: “The guitars gnarl, swing, roar and hit each other over a rumbling rythm section, and in the deep of it all is what we’re all looking for: good, well constructed songs.”

Adding to this, the winner og Wimp’s Juba competition will be playing in the Camp Indie tent. Check our website for updates on this.

Fy faen, Honningbarna er bra. Hadde fortjent å spille på en større scene, men tiden er kanskje ikke inne for det ennå. Neste år?
