BROKEN BELLS AND THE HOTTEST NORWEGIAN ELECTRONICA TO ØYA

broken bells øyafestivalen 2010

The completion of the Øya-program is only a few weeks away. Last Saturday, we confirmed the English ska-legends The Specials. Today, one of this year’s most exciting pop sensations was confirmed to the Medieval park. Broken Bells, a collaboration between the creative forces of Gnarls Barkley and The Shins, are playing at the Øya festival on Thursday the 12th of August. On the same day we bring you amongst others Pavement, Jonsi, LCD Soundsystem, Against Me!, Panda Bear, Casiokids, Kråkesølv, Baroness and Miike Snow.

At the same time we are releasing a great little package of fresh Norwegian electronica. The dance-party lads Todd Terje and Dølle Jølle are coming to Øya to give you a chance to drop your inhibitions and dance yourself silly. With an album releasing soon, Ost & Kjex will serve as the icing on the club-music cake as they are also ready for the Medieval park. They have promised to bring the full ”party-pack”, consisting of amongst other things a choir, brass, percussion and the famous Norwegian Jazz musician Bugge Wesseltoft.

We have done a fine count of our ticket sales and we can now announce that there are only 900 festival passes left for The Øya Festival 2010. This means that this year’s sales have been one of our best ever. Many of the acts have now been placed on different days in the program, so it will be easy to get the most out of the open air part of this year’s festival. To view the program

BROKEN BELLS (US)
During this year’s Øya festival, you can experience one of this year’s most exciting pop-collaborations. The brains behind the successful Gnarls Barkley and The Shins secretly joined forces a couple of years ago under the name Broken Bells. Their album, released in March and named after the band itself, was an immediate success. Record buyers secured this glorius album a seventh place on the American album chart. Broken Bells is one of this spring’s most talked about and credible pop-projects. Their single The High Road has already been spinning on Norwegian radio.

The two creative forces of Broken Bells are James Mercer and Brian Burton. Mercer has for over ten years been the leading man between the American indiepop sucess The Shins. With records like Chutes To Narrow (2003) and Wincing The Night Away (2007), he has deserved a place in modern American pop history as the great song writer he is. Burton has for several years been known as Danger Mouse, but his real commercial breakthrough came with Gnarls Barkley and the record Elsewhere. This was a collaboration with rapper and singer Cee-Lo. Adding to this, Burton has worked with Gorillaz, Beck, Black Keys and The Good, The Bad and The Queen, and also made the Jay Z/Beatles mix The Grey Album. With Broken Bells, he proves how he masters yet a different sound. A couple of months ago, Burton was voted best producer of the last decennium by renown Paste Magazine.

Glenn Olsen of Norwegian magazine Natt & Dag wrote the following about Broken Bells’ record: ”Friends of The Shins should definitely check this out. Actually, anyone who has a liking of good pop should. Summer came early this year!”

Jørgen Hegstad from Norwegian music journal Lydverket claimed that ”Broken Bells is so far the most hammock-friendly album this year. Irresistibly relaxed and cute, with James Mercer in great melodic shape and with a partner who amplifies all his good sides…”

On Thursday the 12th of August, you can see Broken Bells perform in the Medieval Park. Enjoy cool pop, warm sun and a great atmosphere. We are really looking forward to Broken Bells spreading their wonderful tunes all over the Øya Festival grounds.

OST & KJEX
The duo Ost & Kjex have been a phenomenon on the Norwegian club scene for many years. In 2004, they released the debut album Some But Not All Cheese Comes From The Moon, based on sounds made with cheese and biscuits. These two food-loving gentlemen have played at clubs and festivals all over Europe, to many a dancefloor’s great delight. Their lively performances have earned them a well deserved reputation as being the highlight of any musical gathering. A few years ago, they turned the venue Hell’s Kitchen upside down during the Øya club-day and made the crowd go absolutely wild. Following Ost & Kjex’ concert at By:larm last year, on of the Norwegian journalists present wrote that this was one of ”the funniest concerts he had ever experienced”

During the last years, the duo have released several 12” records with appropriate titles such as Eaten Back to Life, Kjexterminate, How Not To Be A Biscuit, Kjexy Snick Snack and Boston Food Strangler. This June, they are releasing their second album called Cajun Lunch, comprising of pop-marinated house that you can dance yourself silly to. The new song material has a more traditional build-up and more vocals than on earlier recordings. We can promise you a full-on show that will take its toll on your shoe soles. Joining them on stage will be amongst others, Tracee’s Gospel Choir, Norwegian jazz musician Bugge Wesseltoft, percussionists and horns. Leave your painful shoes and bad mood at home, and come enjoy some proper club atmosphere in the Medieval Park.

TODD TERJE & DØLLE JØLLE
Todd Terje has yet to become a prophet in his homeland, but he is big news abroad. His genious dance friendly edits (often made under the name Tangoterje), are met by shaky knees and sweaty palms all over the blog-world, and he spins records for huge crowds in Brazil to Australia via Singapore. Expectations are everything but low to his upcoming collection Remaster of the universe, comprising of 20 remixes/edits and two originals.

Terje Olsen, which is his real name, is also the man behind the club concept Shari Vari, together with DJ-partner Jørg Georg Sannes Knutsen, known under the moniker Dølle Jølle. The latter was responsible for one of the greatest tunes of 2008, namely Balearic Incarnation, followed up by a floorkiller remix courtesy of Todd Terje. Dølle Jølle has recently also remixed Øya artist Lindstrøm & Christabelle.

Todd Terje and Dølle Jølle’s live debut at By:larm this year was a big event for music in general and especially for for fans of intelligent and danceable neo-disco. We are told the duo have more cards up their sleeves for us at this year’s Øya Festival, but exactly what we can expect to experience at their concert in the Medieval Park remains a secret. The fact that you should not miss this gig is less of a mystery.
