DIPLO (US)
HOLY FUCK (CA)
GIRL TALK (US)

We’re trying our best to get through the icy winds of February, and with these three terrific acts confirmed, it just got a little easier. American DJs Diplo and Girl Talk will get you dancing the park, and Holy Fuck from Canada will offer some surprising and wicked electro fun. Put on a big ol’ smile, a pair of shades, and yer best dancing shoes!

DIPLO (US)
In August one of the central figures and hottest names in new American club culture is coming to Oslo and the Øya Festival. Diplo is a man who is not afraid to try out untraditional musical recipes in his attempts to create the ultimate musicfest – and he’ll get you dancing like a maniac.
Diplo’s real name is Wesley Pentz, born and raised in the South, and currently residing in Philadelphia. He quit his job as a teacher a few years back to focus all his attention on music. In addition to being a brilliant DJ, he’s also known for his role as a producer for MIA. He also runs his own label, called Mad Decent, on which he has released his own stuff, Blaqstarr, and last year’s party kings at Øya, Bonde Do Role. Diplo has spent a lot of time in Brazil the last few years, and has done his share to spread the genre baile funk to the rest of the world. His own album ‘Florida’ came out in 2004, and during the spring, more Diplo material will be available in stores, so start saving up yer hard-earned cash.
And as all of this wasn’t enough, he’s also part of the club concept Hollertronix and have over the past few years remixed as widely different artists as Gwen Stefani, Decemberists, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Spank Rock, Modest Mouse, Hot Chip, and Beatles. Get ready to dance yer socks off!

HOLY FUCK (CA)
The Canadian wave of the past few years has been centered around smart indie pop and related genres. Toronto natives Holy Fuck, however, deliver modern electronic music with a lo-fi twist, as well as a few ideas taken from rock. They started up as a rather spontaneous project, and their material was far from finished when they went on the road to present it to others. Picky critics on both sides of the Atlantic loved last year’s album ‘Holy Fuck LP’, and NME and Rough Trade, among others, gave it a very high placing on the “best of 2007” album charts.
The band consists of Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh on keys and effects, as well as friends of theirs on bass and drums. Their debut (simply entitled ‘Holy Fuck’) came out in 2005, but it’s only during the last six months that the rest of the world has gotten wind of the band. They’re considered to be one of Canada’s most exciting live acts and have already toured with names like Wolf Parade, Slint, Buck 65, A Place to Bury Strangers, Super Furry Animals, and The Go! Team. This bunch has the ability to blow musical prejudices and sour skepticism straight outta the minds of their audience. Many have become totally hooked after seeing them live or hearing their records. Eye Magazine called them “[a] multi-layered psychedelic mayhem”, Drowned in Sound claimed that they play “experimental improvised songs where not even they know what will happen”, and PopMatters experienced the finalé of one of their shows as “a reverb-heavy, sun-is-rising/new-day-is-born meditation on life”. Now it’s time for you to witness this spectacle and make up your own mind. The Øya Festival will be your opportunity.

GIRL TALK (US)
Behind the name Girl Talk we find DJ and producer Gregg Gillis from Pittsburgh. He creates new and exciting stuff by combining old music samples you’d never think would work together. In his material you’ll find loads of famous samples from rock, hip hop, indie, electronica, old and cheesy pop, and more. The familiar is mixed with the obscure, without thought to strict genre limits or musical prejudice. The goodies are melted together in a musical pot you’ll never tire of.
This is an artist that’ll put a big smile on the face of anyone with a broad musical taste and horizon. Gregg Gillis started out on the Pittsburgh underground scene, but quickly grew out of it, not least because he delivers a show few other DJs can match. It’s been almost a year since this guy made our booking crew choke on their spare ribs during an event at SXSW ‘07. What a show!
The man has also done successful remixes for Of Montreal, Peter, Bjørn & John, and Beck. Thus far, Girl Talk has released three albums, ‘Night Ripper’ from 2006 being the latest, and a new album is supposedly due for release in 2008, entitled ‘Feed the Animals’. In August he’ll pay the Øya Festival a visit. Don’t miss it!
