CAMP INDIE
About a week ago we told you that we were done booking acts for the outdoor segment of the Øya Festival. Well … call it a miscalculation, a slip of the memory, trickery or just flat-out nonsense, but the truth is that we had left three slots open in the Medieval Park; two that we were saving for after National Music Day in Oslo, and another one that just took a little extra time. Anyways, the Øya bill is now finally complete, and we proudly present one big British name and two Norwegian ones that are on the rise. In addition, the bill for our intimate and exciting Camp Indie tent is also ready and done. Here, you can see interesting acts from a selection of the best minor labels in Norway every day during the festival. And as if that ain’t enough, the Camp Indie tent will also offer literature readings every day in cooperation with Vinduet, as well as a children’s disco on Friday and Saturday. We also hope to have a complete Club Night (August 11) program for you in about a week’s time.
There are still Day Passes left for all days at Billettservice.no
DOVES (UK) – Friday Aug. 14
This spring the British lads in Doves released their fourth album, Kingdom of Rust. The album was very well received, and several critics pointed out that this is an album that grows on you and has a long life span. Doves were formed many years ago in Manchester, under the name Sub Sub, playing a kind of danceable electro. Toward the end of the 90s they regrouped, took the name Doves and set out in a more rock-oriented direction. They made their album debut in 2000, and with the follow-up two years later they climbed to #1 on the charts back home. With their third full-length album, Some Cities, they repeated this feat in 2005. Kingdom of Rust has “only” climbed to #2, but there’s no doubt that this is one of England’s steadiest and most dependable bands when it comes to both quality and sales numbers. Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet sums up the album as follows: “Grandiose song tableaus, a splendid integration of rock and dance elements, coarseness and tenderness, melodious suppleness, powerful rock and Refrains! with a capital letter and an exclamation mark.” We’re very pleased to announce that one of the hottest British acts of the past decade is headed to the Øya Festival.

LE CORBEAU (N) – Thursday Aug. 13
Øystein Sandsdalen has been involved in many different Norwegian rock bands over the past ten years. The list includes acts like Thee Unmist, Jaded, Angora Static and Infidels Forever. However, he’s probably best known to the public as the second guitarist of Serena Maneesh. Last year he released an EP under the name Le Corbeau, and many were intrigued by this flirtation with shoegazing, noise rock and related music genres. Now, the full-length album Evening Chill/Montréal of the mind is out. Also, after a few line-up changes, Le Corbeau is now ready to perform live. If you like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus & Mary Chain and their like.minded, Le Corbeau will be right up your alley. They’ve found just the right balance between glorious noise and wonderful melodies; a potent mix that will suck you right into a world of slightly chaotic harmonies.

DONKEYBOY (N) – Wednesday Aug. 12
Donkeyboy consists of a handful of fine, young gentlemen from the Norwegian city of Drammen. Their hit Ambitions has gotten quite a lot of airtime on Norwegian radio lately, and now they’ve landed a deal in the big league, with Warner Music. In other words, Donkeyboy stands ready to conquer our hearts and souls with great pop music in the years to come. Toying around with the sound of the 80s doesn’t cause the band any embarrassment, and they also admit to having listened to both Michael Jackson and Fleetwood Mac. Donkeyboy isn’t a semi-lame retro act, but a band for the future. With their pleasant melodies and confident performances, we’re convinced that these guys will be part of the scene for many years to come. We eagerly await their Øya performance, and also their debut album, which is due this fall.

THE CAMP INDIE BILL:
CAPTAIN CREDIBLE (N)
Born of British parents and currently residing in Trondheim, Daniel Lacey McDermott, a.k.a. Captain Credible, points to coffee as one of his greatest inspirational sources. And when listening to his music, it becomes fairly obvious that this guy is in the habit of consuming rather large quantities of caffeine. His music is both weird, charming, chaotic and ecstatic, all at once, and live it is even more extreme. Attending a Captain Credible live show is like playing Nintendo 8bit with the volume cranked up to the max and you yourself being the main character in the game. Imagine being Mario for a night. This is one of the shows that we’re looking the most forward to this year. Yi-haa!
TVANG (N)
Tvang made their album debut in 2007 with the critically acclaimed Ny Morgen, which was recorded by the guys themselves in a run-down rehearsal room without a single buck in financial backing. When producer Rune Lamøy heard the demo songs, he refused to let them take the same approach and insisted on taking the band into a real studio. The result was Tvang’s latest album, Unik, which really brings out the strong points of the band: airy guitars, hard drumming, distorted lap steel, bass lines that stick like glue – and their lyrics, which are sung in Norwegian. Don’t miss out on Tvang at Øya this summer!
FIREFLY EFFECT (N)
With their retro-futuristic sunshine pop, Firefly Effect has illuminated many a dark and gloomy concert venue over the past two years, and now they’re ready to outshine the sun in the Medieval Park. If you’re ready for some happy and playful synth pop, make sure you’re there.
ACCIDENTS NEVER HAPPEN (N)
The return of Accidents Never Happen to Oslo might very well be the most beautiful thing to happen to this city in a great many years! After having travelled to Liverpool a few years back, played loads of gigs and met both some pleasant and unpleasant people, they’re now back in the safe bosom of good ol’ Oslo. Their self-entitled second album, which came out on Dead Letter Records in April this spring, is very dark and dismal, but it’s also so good that you can’t help but cheer out loud. Three cheers!
KRÅKESØLV (N)
Kråkesølv consists of four young gentlemen who’ve barely turned eighteen, and they’ll be coming to the Øya Festival packing a handful of tunes remindful of e.g. Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead and the dark polar night. They’ll be coming all the way down from our pearl to the north, the city of Bodø, and they also sing all their songs in pure North-Norwegian. Rumor has it that they also have a bowling team of their own, so take this opportunity to challenge them to a match.
MONZANO (N)
Monzano is an indie orchestra based in Oslo. They released their debut album on How Is Annie! Records in 2007 and are currently working on their second album. Singer and songwriter Sjur Lyseid has enjoyed great success with his other project, Little Hands of Asphalt, but now he’s back on board the mothership, Monzano. Indie pop for the whole family! And they’re big in Japan, too. Imagine that.
FRODE FIVEL (N)
We first became aware of Frode Fivel through the band Hello Goodbye, who ravaged Norwegian venues in the early days of this decade. Back then, dirty rock was his thing, but as a solo act he focuses on ballads and indie rock. Fivel is signed to the Fredrikstad-based label Café Superstar, and his performance in the park is sure to be a memorable experience.
MARIBEL (N)
Maribel took their sweet time in releasing the debut album Aesthetics, but hot damn, did it sound good when it finally came out! Critics in Norwegian newspapers gave it a 6/6, and the band also gives intense live performances. Who wouldn’t remember their gig at the Vika stage back in 2007? This year you have chance to see them inside the Camp Indie tent. Be there early, because it’s going to be jam-packed. And amazing.
MUNN TIL MUNN METODEN (N)
Munn Til Munn Metoden will be the next big thing to come out of the Norwegian electronica scene – or at least it would be so if there had been some justice in this world. However, we all know that that’s rarely the case, but when Munn Til Munn Metoden performs in the Medieval Park during this year’s festival, you’ll have a chance to get a load of the boys before they take over the world – be it the entire world, your world or an imaginary world.
JENS CARELIUS (N)
Jens Carelius and his band played perhaps two of the best concerts during this year’s by:Larm music convention in Oslo – at least according to us here at Camp Indie. With his new band he has gathered inspiration from the English folk scene and American 1930s blues. His debut album, First Songs, got rave reviews in Norwegian newspapers, and he has also been on a week-long tour with Jackie Leven in England. His second album will be out in September.
THE GOO MEN (N)
Take a hearty dash of garage rock, add loads of soul, a bit of dandyness and some good-looking suits, and voilà! you have The Goo Men. As they put it themselves: “The Goo Men want you to dance, so get out on the floor!” If you’re not out on the dance floor this evening, then you must’ve put on the wrong pair of shoes, because the Camp Indie tent will be shaking.
SLOW CLUB (UK)
Slow Club is a folk/pop duo from Sheffield, England, signed to cred label Moshi Moshi Records. Charles and Rebecca are slightly remindful of Moldy Peaches, only without the bizarre lyrics, but in return they look a lot better than their crazy contemporary songwriters from New York. According to themselves, Charles is inspired by early Leonard Cohen, and Rebecca is inspired by both old and new Rod Stewart. We will simply confine ourselves to saying that their music is beautiful and amazing, and we’re sure you will think so, too, if you check out the song Christmas TV at myspace.com/slowclub. And you should also, not least, come and check them out in our tent on August 15! Enjoy!
