KITSUNE MAISON NIGHT FEAT. DAVID E. SUGAR (live) + JERRY BOUTHIER (UK) + LUCA C (UK)
It’s very hard to sum up the French phenomenon Kitsuné in only a few words. It’s a record company, a clothing brand, and also an art conglomerate. In this context, however, the first of these three labels is the most suitable, and PlanB, in cooperation with Øya, is happy to announce that Kitsuné Maison is coming to our capital to sprinkle glittering stardust on stage.
One of the most special things about Kitsuné is their eclectic music style. Among others, they’ve signed Digitalism, Fox’n’Wolf, and Autokratz. The idea is that no genre should be left out, and Kitsuné has become famous for its extraordinary compilations: ‘Kitsuné Love’, ‘Kitsuné Midnight’, and not least the ‘Kitsuné Maison Compilation’ series. By making use of innovative concepts, like including food recipes in album sleeves and filling covers with drawings of the faces of all the people they’ve worked with over the past few years, Kitsuné has mastered the difficult art being recognizable, but not boring.
On August 9, Kitsuné Maison will be represented by none other than the infamous Boombox hero Jerry Bouthier and Luca C from Cazals, and we’ll also be treated to a live set by David E. Sugar himself.
DAVID E. SUGAR (UK – live)
After having been on tour with Digitalism for quite a long time, as well as having had several club hits, London boy David E. Sugar is now finally ready for Norway.
Originating from the blip scene, Sugar sky-rocketed into the bloggosphere and our collective consciousness in 2007. The first thing that blew our minds, was the techno hit “Oi Oi New York This Is London”, followed by 2007’s most catchy electro pop tune, “Chelsea Girls”.
David E. Sugar makes in-your-face electro songs that would make Chromeo blush. These tight tracks are mixed with grand refrains and punchy pop hooks.
During 2008, Mr. Sugar has toured Europe vigorously, and he recently released the single “To Yourself” on Kitsuné – a tight and groovy tune, melancholy and irritatingly catchy.
At Stratos, Sugar will present his live set, and with such immediate pop songs you’ll have no reason not to dance. In fact, you won’t have a choice.
JERRY BOUTHIER DJ SET (UK)
Jerry Bouthier is primarily known for being a resident DJ at the now closed-down and already legendary London club BoomBox. Here, the creative minds of London gathered and danced into the wee hours in a blaze of decadent clothing, original dance moves, and playful electro.
BoomBox’ reputation as a super club and a taste-maker in the finest of electronic music led to Bouthier being asked to make a mix album of Kitsuné. This resulted in ‘Kitsuné Boombox’, a mix album filled with hard electro, cheerful house, ex-pop princesses that sound like queens, and edits done by Bouthier and Alex Gagrino from the duo JBAG.
Since the mix, Jerry Bouthier has toured around the globe and played any and all places worth playing, from large clubs to fashion shows for Vivienne Westwood. Today, he’s one of the most sought-after DJs in the world. His style is glamorous, fun, and hard. It’s allowed to be decadent; it’s allowed to love life. Come as you are, and use the last of your strength on Jerry Bouthier.
LUCA C DJ SET (UK)
Luca C is known to most people as the handsome guitar player from Cazals. But in addition to Cazals, Luca has done loads of tasteful DJ-mixes. After a hysterical 80s mix that was distributed through Discobelle and Cazal’s MySpace, rumors of his sets began to spread.
Luca C does exclusive sets between Cazal tours. Rumor has it that a Luca C project is to be released on Kitsuné later this year. This man is certainly worth paying attention to. Clean, tasteful mixing and the best start imaginable start to this year’s event.
Smuglesning.no and Tornado at Parkteateret present:
THE PRESETS (AU)
LA RIOTS (US)
THE PRESETS (AU)
Over the past few years, Australia has been responsible for an entire wave of bands that operate in the intersection between electronica, pop, and rock. One of them is Cut Copy – already on the Øya bill – and another is Midnight Juggernauts. The Sydney-based duo The Presets is also surfing this wave, and with a sound that borrows just as much from the darker sides of the 80s as from modern dance music. The Presets are signed to Modular Recordings, which is also home to acts like The Avalanches, aforementioned Cut Copy, and Wolfmother, but their sound is a wee bit sharper and more club-oriented than those of their label mates. Imagine the Pet Shop Boys having two evil twins, or maybe a more danceable version of Depeche Mode. But even though the references are many, The Presets sound only like The Presets, and they recently went straight to #1 on Australian charts with their second album, ‘Apocalypso’. In other words, Australians seem to have developed good taste of late. The Presets perform live at Parkteateret on Thursday Aug. 7.
LA RIOTS (US)
When you name your DJ-duo after one of the most famous riot incidents of the previous century, it naturally creates a certain level of expectation. Daniel Ledisco and Jo’B are known for their solid remixes of acts like Justice, Chromeo, Weezer, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Hot Chip, Mystery Jets, and VHS or Beta. Living up to the LA part of their name is not a problem for them, seen as Los Angeles is their home town. But the last part of the name might be equally relevant. Both as producers and DJs, the duo has the ability to make stuff that hits people straight in the abdominal area. Give these guys a couple of hours in any given club, and there will probably be riots taking place on the floor by the time the lights go on. On Thursday Aug. 7 they perform after The Presets at Parkteateret. It’s gonna be a riot.
13thfloor Club at Garage presents:
THE SONICSUB (N)
THE SONICSUB (N)
Rebellion? Hardly. At least not in the most evident sense of the word, though it’s still a likely ingredient. It sure sounds like it, though, when the forever young gentlemen in The SonicSub wreak rock’n’roll havoc in a way that proves that the golden age of rock ain’t over just yet.
It was a dark and desperate time for garage rock lovers when The Moods dissolved – many questions went unanswered, and yet another era was irrevocably over. Luckily, a couple of former Moods-members, Njål Brauer (vocals) and Erik Hovde (guitar), stuck their heads together and recruited one helluva rhythm section: Eivind Finsrud on bass and Even Finsrud on drums. Before you could say “The Moods have dissolved”, The SonicSub had arisen from the ashes. One should of course, as the old proverb says, strike the iron while it’s still hot. The SonicSub plays together with The Urges on Saturday, the same day as The Sonics will be bombarding the audience with fuzz in the Medieval Park.

THE FIELD (SE)
The Field, a.k.a. Axel Willner, burst onto the techno scene in 2005 with the 12” ’Things Keep Falling Down’ on the German techno label Kompakt. Since then, Alex Wilner has demonstrated a rare ability to cross musical borders, which also has gained him a large audience that includes everything from rockers to techno freaks. He has a production style that draws upon both minimalistic techno and shoegazer rock like My Bloody Valentine. The Field will be performing in Oslo with a full live line-up.
FITTS FOR FIGHT (N)
”Norwegian act Fitts for Fight became target of hatred #1 of the united Norwegian music biz when they were caught stealing other people’s music. Now, these little girls from Kristiansand are back with their pockets full of self-composed material, and they still sport the same badass attitude. Electro with balls, though without nuts… or something like that. Long live the thieves!” – Tore Jazztobakk
BURAKA SOM SISTEMA DJ SET (PT)
Buraka Som Sistema come from the outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal, and are inspired by ”kuduro”, a style of music that originates from the former Portuguese colony Angola. The word translates into English as ”hard ass”. Buraka Som Sistema plays genuine party music that includes and mixes elements from the aforementioned kuduro, as well as grime, hip hop, house, and baile funk. They also mix African elements with European in their own unique way. They’re signed to cred label Modular, which also is home to e.g. bands like Wolfmother, Klaxons, New Young Pony Club, and the Norwegian act The Whitest Boy Alive. In an interview in the Norwegian mag PlanB this spring, they described themselves as follows: “We present ourselves to the audience in two ways: through the live shows, and through the DJ sets. When we do DJ sets, we’re two DJs and one MC who rock the audience and mix kuduro, grime, drum’n’bass, and funk carioca,” – Buraka Som Sistema
