Saturday 09 august. Scene: Øyanatt: The Villa
Buraka Som Sistema come from the outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal, and are inspired by ”kuduro”, a style of music that originates from the former Portuguese colony Angola. The word translates into English as ”hard ass”. Buraka Som Sistema plays genuine party music that includes and mixes elements from the aforementioned kuduro, as well as grime, hip hop, house, and baile funk. They also mix African elements with European in their own unique way. They’re signed to cred label Modular, which also is home to e.g. bands like Wolfmother, Klaxons, New Young Pony Club, and the Norwegian act The Whitest Boy Alive. In an interview in the Norwegian mag PlanB this spring, they described themselves as follows: “We present ourselves to the audience in two ways: through the live shows, and through the DJ sets. When we do DJ sets, we’re two DJs and one MC who rock the audience and mix kuduro, grime, drum’n’bass, and funk carioca,” – Buraka Som Sistema
